Our Allotment

We have taken on an allotment on Fore Lane for children to have opportunities to visit in small groups. During these visits they will be able to see where their food comes from and to help with the up keep of the area including digging and planting as well as picking and washing the fruit and vegetables when they are ready to eat.

To give children the opportunity to:

  • see where food comes from

  • dig, carry, lift, watering all of which develop their shoulder and core muscles (essential foundations for writing skills)

  • learn about, and interact with, the living environment. Learn about the responsibility of looking after plants, what they need to grow, how we can care for them and about the seasons.

  • learn about patience whilst waiting for the plants to grow and produce to ripen

  • engage all their senses and to develop and recognise them without even realising. For example they can feel the texture of soil, seeds, flower and petals. They get to smell all the amazing flower scents, see all the colourful petals and taste the produce grown.

  • enhance their mathematical skills - counting seeds and petals, and describing colours and shapes of plants.

  • encourage communication and language skills - discussing what needs to be done, sharing experiences and learning new words in context

  • practice social skills and interactions - listening to and following instructions, taking turns and working as a team
